The hike leads through the original and the modern days Moselle valley. The Moselle flowed originally along north of the village Lieser. Other highlights include the "ObstArtWeg" in Wehlen, which provides information about the orchards in an artistic way, and the "Walderlebnispfad" on the plateau of Lieser and Kues.

Insights into the hiking tour:

The hike offers two starting points - either from Lieser or from Wehlen. The hike takes you along vineyard paths and through the forest. On the way you will pass the "Paulskirche" (a church in the middle of the vinyards). Many Moselans sought refuge in this pilgrimage site on the Paulsberg during the revolutionary period around 1848. In October 1848 one of the largest demonstrations of the Rhine province took place here. After a long ascent at the beginning of the trail, a flat hike follows on the Kueser Plateau. The "Obstartweg" in Wehlen provides clear information about the flora and fauna of the region.

Author’s recommendation

The "Wehlener Obstartweg" provides a lot of information. Be sure to bring some time with you: it's worth it!

Partly on vineyard roads, which are of course also used by tractors and cars. But the roads are very wide and offer enough space.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the market place in Lieser you start the hike "Vom Urstrom zum Strom" (alternatively: Bernkastel-Wehlen, parking area Am Krausbach), which leads you through vineyards, forest landscapes and orchard meadows for about 17 kilometres.

From the market place in Lieser some roads branch off. Follow the "Hochstraße" in a northerly direction until you reach the end of the village. Continue through the vineyards to "Paulskirche" (church). Many Moselans sought refuge in this pilgrimage site on the Paulsberg during the hard revolutionary period around 1848.

The Paulskirche is a vivid illustration of the Moselle's glacial stream. A dry valley lies at the foot of the church, stretching as far as the village of Lieser and today's Moselle. The original Moselle valley near Mülheim continued beyond the Moselle as far as Veldenz and Burgen. The glacial stream of the Moselle flowed through these valleys. The mountains surrounded by these dry valleys are called circulating mountains. Like the steep slopes of today's Mosellauf, they are ideal for winegrowing.

You go on to the "Dreifaltigkeit" (Trinity). Many paths branch off there and a hut invites you to rest. There is also an old crossroads made of red sandstone.

Passing the refuge, the path leads you for a long time almost straight on. Then turn left and descend to the wine village of Wehlen with its orchards. You hike along the "Wehlener ObstArtWeg" and the various adventure stations through the Wehlen nature reserve. The steep ascent to the Kueser Plateau follows a serpentine road. This climatic health resort in the town of Bernkastel-Kues is famous for its four MEDIAN clinics and the Cusanus farm.

Passing the farm and a large paddock along the edge of the forest, the path turns into the forest in front of the residential area. You continue on parts of the forest experience path. The path leads you past the Median clinic "Burg Landshut" to the edge of the valley with a view of the town of Bernkastel-Kues. You will then continue along the edge of the valley or forest before being led back to the starting point through the vineyards of Lieser.
